DISC CHALLENGE

DISC Challenge is a pan-national competition for aspiring design students in India. It aims to encourage innovative and notable ideas that contribute to the creation of solutions specifically designed for the seniors. DISC intends to award well designed and practical solutions that augments the life of a senior addressing key issues and their everyday challenges. It endeavors to provide the creators and the innovators of today, a path to drive change in the world by breaking stereotypes, rewrite the story of age.

Time line

eligibility criteria

1.  Participant (s) should currently be an Indian resident (s)
2.  Be enrolled in a full-time and/or part-time program at a recognized college and/or university in India at the time of application
3.  The design concept (s) submitted for the DISC Challenge has to be specifically designed for the seniors.
4.   In order to participate for the DISC Challenge, it is necessary to register on the portal.
5.   Incomplete entries will not qualify and hence it will not be accepted.
6.   For all categories, an individual or a team of participants (maximum 4) can apply.
7.   An individual or a team of participants are allowed to submit multiple entries across all categories or in any one specific category.
8.   Participant (s) are free to choose any subject for their concept as long as the ideas are significant, substantial, meaningful and connect to the theme: design for               what matters.
9.   The concept (s) submitted should represent innovation in design
10.  The conceptual design (s) should be developed with user needs in mind.

submission format

1. Title of the concept
2. One line caption and/or brief description of the concept
3. 150 words abstract of the Design Innovation and what it seeks to solve
4. 8 high resolution images in different angles (minimum 600 DPI and/or JPG/JPEG format)
5. The document is limited to 1500 words and needs to be submitted in PDF Format only (maximum 8MB file size). It should entail an explanation of the key needs identified, design brief, solution, features, use case scenarios, product construction process and other details as may deem fit.

ASSISTIVE MEDICAL PRODUCTS

Innovative product that can provide medical assistance or enhance an existing product and/or device that does the same.

DIGITAL AND ASSISTIVE INTERFACES

An application or a website that can provide easy navigation and the necessary content helpful for the seniors or specially-abled.

LIFESTYLE PRODUCTS

Smart and an innovative product designed to bridge the digital generation gap for seniors. Designing a product and/or solution that successfully inspires, guides or helps the user in their everyday lives.

FASHION AND ASSISTIVE CLOTHING

Designing easy to wear smart clothing for the seniors (including medical patients, specially-abled etc) in line with the latest trends.

FURNITURE

Modern furniture with out of the box features to assist the seniors in their daily routine.

KITCHEN AND HOME PRODUCTS

Kitchen tool and home appliance modified or recreated for easier use.

SAFETY

Device that assures safety to life or property by developing a groundbreaking design feature with utility.

OPEN CATEGORY

A universal design and/solution that overlaps the above design categories put together.

EVALUATION CRITERIA

Jury will use the following representative criteria for evaluation:

What level of innovation has been observed in the solution delivery of the product?

What is the ease-of-adoption for the end-user group with the solution?

What is the level of positive visual appeal of the product from the end-user perspective?

How does this product/concepts and out against the next best competitor(s) from the perspective of value-added etc.?

JUDGING AND JURY

All submissions are evaluated by an expert jury of luminaries. A specialist jury, selected together by ISDI and Seniority, composed of the top creatives from across the country will judge all submitted entries and will base their decision on the evaluation criteria mentioned above.

DISC recognizes the efforts of talented designers and design teams who aim to improve the daily lives of the seniors with a practical and beautiful creations, designed to solve a problem, make life easier or simply spread joy.

CASH PRIZE:

One first prize of INR 100,000
Two Runner Up prizes of INR 25,000 each

ATTEND THE WINNERS GALA:

The esteemed Jury will select 1 finalist and 2 runners up who will be invited to attend the DISC Summit to be held in 2019 at the Indian School of Design and Innovation in Mumbai.
The DISC Summit is a design forum and the awards ceremony wherein winners will be felicitated. Finalists will be asked to pitch their entries to the Jury at the ceremony, where the final awards will be determined.

DISC WINNERS SEAL:

All finalists will receive the coveted DISC Award trophy and a certificate of achievement. Finalists will also be highlighted on the DISC website and published on acclaimed media platforms throughout the year.

FEATURE IN THE ANNUAL BOOK:

Finalists will be featured in the DISC publication which will be distributed to a gamete of design professionals, press and potential clients globally. Winners will receive extensive publicity all throughout the following year, showcasing their designs to a worldwide audience.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

1. Individuals or teams who sign up for the competition shall be deemed to agree and comply with the Rules & Regulations listed below; the organizer (DISC) has the final right to interpret the Rules & Regulations.
2. DISC reserves the right to refuse entry of concept (s) of products and/or solutions that do not comply with any or all-applicable eligibility criteria.
3. DISC reserves the right to withdraw the award at any time, even after it being granted if found that the information submitted by the participant (s) is incorrect.
4. The decision of the jury is final, and no correspondence will be entertained post the announcement of winners.
5. All material and accompanying documentation must be submitted in clear written English.
6. The jury shall not participate in the competition or guide any applicant (s) participating in the competition. Any team receiving guidance from a jury member (s) will be disqualified.
7. Through the submission, all intellectual property of the participants’ work will be assigned to DISC and DISC is entitled to use the design idea or partial scheme on this project, to reproduce, publish, exhibit, compile and disseminate to information networks the works, and to introduce, display and evaluate the works through media, books, newspapers, advertisements and the Internet, without obtaining consent of the author or any payment.

Frequently asked questions

WHO ALL QUALIFY AS STUDENT PARTICIPANTS?
Any registered student on a undergraduate Education, or Higher Education course (part time or full time) in art, design, film, architecture, technology, humanities, management, engineering and at any level at the time of the deadline for entries (dd/mm/yy) qualifies as a student participant. The student competition is not open to design professionals
IS THIS DESIGN OR ENGINEERING COMPETITION?
This is a Design competition and not a technology or engineering competition. This means that entries will be evaluated for their purpose, human factors, user experience, aesthetics as well as feasibility of workability.
I’M NOT A STUDENT OF DESIGN. CAN I PARTICIPATE?
Yes, any student project that fits in the above categories and is design related can participate in DISC. It is not necessary that the participant is a student of design.
IS THERE A PARTICIPATION FEE TO BE PAID?
Participation is free for students. There is no fee for registration or submission.
CAN WE PARTICIPATE IN A GROUP?
Yes, Group participation is allowed. Mention the group / team names in the registration form. However, only one award will be given to the entire group, if applicable. The entry and all communication will be directed to the student who has filled & submitted the form
CAN I SUBMIT MULTIPLE DESIGN PROJECTS?
Yes, each submission has to be separately registered with new user name and password. Each individual or group is permitted a maximum of 3 entries.
WILL IT BE POSSIBLE FOR ME TO CHANGE MY SUBMISSION?
Yes. Once you login to your submission page, you have an option of either saving your submission or submitting it. Once you submit, the submission cannot be changed. However, you may click Edit and Save your submission till the last date of submission i.e.,31st December 2018. You must click Submit to be able to participate in the competition and make your entry valid.
HOW CAN I SEE OTHER SUBMISSIONS?
Only the selected award winning entries can be seen after the competition results are out.
CAN I APPLY WITH AN ENTRY THAT HAS ALREADY BEEN ENTERED, PUBLISHED OR WON ANOTHER COMPETITION?
Yes. It has to be from your regular coursework project validated by your Design school or college.
IS THERE A TEMPLATE FOR THE PRESENTATION?
Yes. Entries must be supplied as a high-resolution .jpegs, Between 200 – 300 dpi, CMYK in A3 size (Max. 2 MB per image board). A maximum of 3 no. – A3 images can be supplied for submission. The A3 image must demonstrate development of the thought process from the original research to the final design concept.
WHAT KIND OF WORK SHOULD NOT BE SUBMITTED?
Skill exercises like drawing or sketching as stand alone or submissions where the project is not understood due to lack of completion or visual detail will find it difficult to compete and stand a good change of getting rejected in the first round.
I AM UNABLE TO TRAVEL TO COLLECT MY AWARD. HOW CAN I RECEIVE IT?
The award will be sent to your registered address by a courier service. You may have to bear the charges for such courier especially for International couriers.
